19th century Charleston landmark with a Southern modern feel.
Built in 1880, the F.W. Wagener Building is a vast, High Victorian structure with large, high-arched windows and cast-iron interior pillars located in Charleston’s famous and historical French Quarter. Originally a wharf side warehouse with a wholesale grocery fronting on East Bay Street, the F.W. Wagener Building has suffered deferred maintenance and patchwork renovations for decades. The building has been renovated several times over the century, becoming the home to the East Bay Trading Company restaurant in the early 1980s and most recently the Southend Brewery Restaurant.
Mount Vernon Partners structured the tax credit program, preservation plan, and proposed a creative adaptive re-use for this iconic building. The F.W. Wagener Building will be the most spacious venue of its kind in downtown Charleston once completed. Construction management also provided by MVP, the building will be restored to its original Victorian luster, with a thorough historic preservation effort begun in summer 2018 with the building opening in mid-2019 as a beautiful, Charleston Southern picturesque venue with top tier restaurants and event spaces.
